Clopay Roller Replacement: The Richmond Owner’s Guide

Clopay roller replacement in Richmond typically runs $110-$220 installed, and we stock the common Clopay sizes on every truck. Most jobs are finished in under an hour. You’ll know the rollers are failing when the door starts shaking in the tracks, grinding, or binding at certain spots.

We’ve replaced Clopay rollers all over Richmond, from the older homes near George Ranch Historical Park to newer builds in Aliana. Texas heat and humidity do a number on the bearings. The grease dries out, the rollers flatten or crack, and suddenly your door sounds like it’s coming off the rails. Sometimes it actually is.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay uses two main roller systems across their residential lines: the standard 2-inch stem roller found on most Classic, Gallery, and Coachman series doors, and the low-headroom or nylon-tipped variants used on Canyon Ridge and some Avante installations. The stem length matters. A Classic series door with a standard 12-inch radius track takes a 4-inch stem. Low-headroom or zero-clearance setups need shorter stems, and forcing the wrong part in bends the track.

We carry OEM Clopay rollers and quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT and Ultra-Life. The OEM nylon rollers run quiet but the bearings are sealed and non-serviceable. Once they go, they go. The aftermarket sealed-steel bearings we prefer hold up better in Richmond’s humidity, and we can grease them during tune-ups. If your door was built between 1995 and 2010, check the roller bracket spacing. Clopay used a slightly narrower bracket on some production runs, and a standard roller will bind. We measure before we quote. Carl Dutton learned that lesson the hard way years back, and we don’t guess anymore.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The door shakes or shudders when opening. This usually means the roller bearings have dried out or the wheel has developed flat spots. The roller catches, releases, catches again, and the whole panel vibrates.
  • You hear grinding or squealing from the track area. Metal-on-metal contact means the nylon wheel has worn through or the bearing race has collapsed. In Richmond’s summer heat, cheap grease turns to sludge and accelerates the wear.
  • The door binds or sticks at the same height every time. One roller is seized or the stem is bent. The opener strains, the door jerks, and the other rollers take excess load. We’ve seen this snap cables on heavier Clopay insulated doors.
  • Rollers are visibly cracked, chipped, or missing chunks. Nylon gets brittle with age and UV exposure. A cracked roller can split under load and drop the door out of the track. This is when a $150 roller job becomes a $400 track-and-roller repair.
  • The door sits crooked in the opening. A failed roller on one side lets that side drop. The gap at the top corner is your tell. Left alone, it warps the door sections and damages the hinges.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Clopay roller replacement in Richmond runs $110-$220 for a standard 10-roller residential door. Single-roller repairs start around $110. Full replacement on a double-wide door with 12 rollers reaches the top of that range.

Service Price Range
Single roller repair $110-$140
Standard 10-roller replacement $150-$190
Double-wide 12-roller replacement $180-$220

What drives the range: how many rollers, whether the brackets need adjustment, and if the track itself took damage from the bad rollers. We quote the flat price before touching anything. Parts, labor, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise are all included. If a roller we installed fails inside 90 days, we come back. No paperwork to file, no argument. That’s in writing on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself. With the door closed and the opener disconnected, lift the door manually. It should move smoothly and stay put around waist height. If it drops hard or binds, the rollers or springs need attention. Look for cracked wheels or bent stems with a flashlight. That’s as far as we’d recommend going.

Replacing rollers on a raised door puts your hands between heavy steel and the track. The door can shift without warning. On torsion-spring Clopay doors, the spring tension makes this genuinely dangerous work. We’ve seen homeowners bend tracks, drop doors, and worse. Our technicians carry the right tools to release and reset spring tension safely. Most roller jobs in Richmond take 45 minutes to an hour. We arrive with the parts, finish in one visit, and leave the tracks clean. Quote first. Work second. No surprises either way. Call (936) 278-3457 when you’re ready.
