Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Richmond Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Richmond typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common sizes for same-day completion. Most Clopay doors use 1/8-inch or 5/32-inch aircraft-grade galvanized cable paired with either standard-lift or high-lift drums depending on your track configuration. If your door is hanging crooked, slipping down after closing, or making a grinding ratchet noise from the top corners, the cable or drum is usually the culprit.

We see this failure pattern often in Richmond, especially after the humid Gulf Coast summers set in. Moisture works its way into the cable windings, the drum grooves collect grit from nearby construction, and eventually something frays or slips. The door goes crooked, the opener strains, and the whole system gets worse fast if you keep running it.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has used several cable and drum combinations across their residential lines. The Classic Collection and Coachman Series typically run 1/8-inch cable with standard 4-inch diameter drums. The Gallery Collection and Grand Harbor lines often need 5/32-inch cable, especially on the heavier insulated doors. Canyon Ridge and Avante full-view doors use specialized drums with deeper grooves to handle the wider cable spacing.

To identify your exact part, check the sticker on the interior side of the door panel for the model number and date code. The drum itself usually has a casting number on the inner hub, something like “D400-96” or “D525-120” that tells us the diameter and cable capacity. If the sticker is gone, we measure drum diameter, cable thickness, and door height on-site.

We carry both OEM Clopay drums and quality aftermarket equivalents from DDM and Service Spring. For most Richmond homes, the aftermarket option matches spec and carries the same 90-day coverage, though we will show you both and let you decide. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked when opening or closing. One cable has stretched, frayed, or slipped off its drum groove, so that side of the door loses lift support. The opener keeps pulling the good side, and the door torques in the frame. We see this most often on doors facing west toward the afternoon sun, where the Richmond heat accelerates cable fatigue.
  • A grinding or clicking noise comes from the top corners of the door. The cable is not seating cleanly in the drum grooves, usually because the drum is worn or the cable has developed flat spots from rubbing. Left alone, this chews up both parts and can damage the bottom brackets.
  • The door slips down a few inches after closing. The cable has stretched beyond its take-up capacity, or the drum set screws have loosened and the drum is rotating on the shaft. This is a safety issue, the door could drop unexpectedly if the cable lets go entirely.
  • Visible rust, fraying, or broken strands on the cable. Aircraft cable is built from seven strands of seven wires each. Once you see three or more broken wires in a section, or rust blooming between strands, the cable is living on borrowed time. Richmond’s humidity, particularly in neighborhoods near the Brazos River bottom, cuts cable lifespan by 20-30 percent compared to drier climates.
  • The drum wobbles or the set screws are backed out. This means the drum is loose on the torsion shaft, either from vibration over years of cycles or from improper torque at installation. A wobbling drum destroys cable alignment and will eventually throw the cable entirely.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Richmond
Single cable replacement (one side) $130-$190
Dual cable replacement (both sides) $180-$250
Drum replacement (one or both) $150-$250
Cable + drum replacement (full set) $200-$340

The range depends on door height, cable thickness, and whether the bottom brackets or cable sleeves also need replacement. A standard 7-foot Clopay door with 1/8-inch cable lands near the lower end. An 8-foot or 9-foot door with high-lift drums and heavier 5/32-inch cable runs higher.

Every quote includes parts, labor, disposal of the old components, and a full balance and safety check before we leave. We state the flat price before touching anything. The work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, if it is not right, we come back at no charge, no paperwork to file.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is a hard stop. You can inspect the cables yourself with the door fully closed and the opener disconnected. Look for fraying, rust, or cables that have jumped their grooves. Check if the door stays put when you lift it halfway, a drifting door points to cable or spring imbalance.

But replacing cables on a torsion-spring door is genuinely dangerous work. The cables are under constant tension from the wound spring, and releasing a bottom bracket or drum without proper winding bars and training can cause serious injury. We have seen DIY attempts in Richmond where someone loosened the wrong set screw and the cable whipped across the garage. It is not worth it.

Our trucks carry Clopay-compatible cables, drums, and hardware, so most jobs finish in one visit. We quote first, work second. No surprises either way. Call (936) 278-3457 when you are ready.
