Signs Your Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• The door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. When a drum slips on the torsion tube or the cable frays unevenly, the lift balance shifts to the intact side. The door skews in the tracks and the rollers bind on one jamb. We see this most often in Richmond’s Pecan Grove and Greatwood subdivisions where the original Raynor installs are hitting twenty-plus years.

• Rust-colored dust or flakes appear below the end bearing plate. That’s oxidation from the drum casting or the cable strands shedding. In Richmond’s clay-soil areas with poor yard drainage, garage humidity runs higher and metal fatigue follows. A drum with surface pitting belongs in the scrap bin - the grooves won’t seat cable cleanly anymore.

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can inspect: look for fraying, check if the cable is seated in all drum grooves, and verify the door sits level when closed. What you should not do is loosen the torsion hardware to free a jammed cable or attempt to rewind cable onto a drum under spring tension. The stored energy in a wound torsion spring can release without warning, and the hardware at the end of that tube is heavy, sharp, and fast-moving.
